polemic

"Let's talk about architecture for a minute. When people use the word architecture, most times they are really referring to, you known, a building as architecture. But the word architecture in its purest sense has a far broader connotation. So what is architecture? Well, let's think of something as simple as a cup. If you were to specify a particular cup design it would enable the production of identically designed cups. Now if you were to think a little bit more deeply about the design of the cup and extract the essence of what makes that cup,  a cup, and really specify those principles and then share it with other people, you would end up with an endless variety of different cup designs. All of those cup designs though would be based on the same principles that comprise the cup's architecture. That set of principles, THAT is architecture."

Vantage Point 2

Entre ciel et terre, 2005 by Felice Varini, photo (c) André Morin

Felice Varini (born in Locarno, Switzerland) is a Paris based artist. His canvas "is architectural space and everything that constitutes such space". Felice Varini’s works have only one view point from which people can see his 'paintings', and from that vantage point, his artwork merges with architecture and the surrounding. "If I establish a particular relation to architectural features", Felice Varini says "that influence the installation shape, my work still preserves its independence whatever architectural spaces I encounter."

Vantage Point 1

The Eureka Car Park, in Melbourne, features a signage system created by Axel Peemoeller while working at Emery Studio. The letter forms are distorted acros the vertical and horizontal services, so that when viewed from the correct position, they can be read perfectly.

Such Anamorphic images have been used in art for many years (eg Holbein's painting The Ambassadors), and have also in more recent years been common on televised sports pitches, such as cricket and rugby, but this is the first time I have seen them used for wayfinding. Wouldn't it be amazing if the apparent jumble of signs and symbolds across a city, when viewed from a certain vantage point, resolved into a beautiful coherent image?

Siza Represents

'When I was a little boy, I fell ill," says Alvaro Siza, lighting up his sixth Camel cigarette. "My parents took me to a house high on a hill so I could breathe good air. I was allowed out on to a veranda. Here, I could look at a perfect view of a beautiful valley spread out below me. By the third week, I hated that view. I never wanted to see it again."
Artigo integral no Guardian: Hail Siza.
